Gov. Jeff Landry signed a state of emergency Tuesday for the Shreveport-area following the damage and death caused by Tropical Storm Beryl when it swept through northwestern Louisiana Monday.

Landry's emergency declaration unlocks recovery resources for affected areas.

The storm advanced from Texas into western Louisiana throughout the day on Monday, with the outer connective bands from the tropical storm causing one fatality, major damage to homes and businesses and massive power outages.

“This state of Emergency will allow parishes affected by Beryl to utilize state resources as we begin the recovery process," Landry said in a statement. "We continue to remain in contact with our first responders and local officials and will assist them in every step of the way.”

A 31-year-old Benton woman died after a tree fell on her home during the storm.

Shreveport's National Weather Service Office issued 65 tornado warnings during the storm, with preliminary data showing at least five tornadoes touching ground.
