Nyjal Hurst Mugshot

A mugshot of Nyjal Hurst, 31, a suspect in a hostage situation that took place in Jeanerette on July 25, 2024. The situation led to the death of a Lafayette SWAT officer and negotiator, Cpl. Segus Jolivette.

The suspect in a hostage situation that led to the death of a Lafayette SWAT officer has been charged with several crimes unrelated to the July 25 shooting.

Nyjal Hurst, 31, was booked Monday morning in St. Mary Parish on charges of aggravated domestic abuse child endangerment, armed robbery, carjacking, aggravated battery and illegal use of a weapon, according to the St. Mary Parish Jail roster.

The charges are part of several warrants Hurst had out for his arrest. On July 25, the Jeanerette City Marshal's Office attempted to serve the warrant when Hurst took two unidentified people hostage around 10 a.m. in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Around 4:30 p.m., the standoff escalated into a shooting that resulted in the death of Senior Cpl. Segus Jolivette and wounded three other officers.

Louisiana State Police are still investigating the officer-involved shooting. Hurst has not been charged in connection to the shooting.
