Crime scene

Two people have been arrested in connection with a Monday shooting that killed a man in Abbeville.

Carlton Hills, 57, and Leticia Lewis, 42, both of Abbeville, were arrested Tuesday after Dalvin Mullens, 31, was gunned down during an argument, according to the Abbeville Police Department.

Investigators said the shooting occurred about 9:40 p.m. Monday during an argument between Mullens and Lewis outside a home in the 1400 block of Israel Parker Drive. During the altercation, Hills approached Mullens and shot twice, killing him, police said.

Surveillance footage captured the moment Mullens was shot, according to police.

Following the shooting, the footage shows Hills leaving with Lewis before returning to the scene, police said. Hills then proceeds to drive over Mullens' body before attempting to move the corpse into his vehicle.

Hills, unable to move the body, called a friend for help, police said. Hills is shown leaving the scene and then returning with Eldridge Anthony Petry. The two loaded the body into the vehicle and dumped it into a coulee south of Abbeville, police said.

The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office received a tip the following afternoon that someone had thrown bloody clothes into a trash can outside a store on South State Street. Video footage showed a man arriving in a vehicle to dispose of the clothes, police said.

Abbeville police found an address associated with the vehicle, then used surveillance footage of the area of the shooting and discovered Hills' alleged role in Mullens' death.

Hills faces counts of second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, having a firearm in a firearm-free zone and three counts of obstruction of justice.

Lewis faces one count of principle to second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and failure to report a felony.

A warrant has been issued for Petry on counts of accessory after the fact and failure to report a felony, as well as other pending charges.

Hills and Lewis are being held at the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center. Hills' bond is set at $415,00, and Lewis' bond is set at $30,000.

Abbeville Police Chief Mike Hardy thanked the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office for its assistance in the investigation.
