Hurricane Beryl wreaked havoc in Jamaica and caused some vacationers to have extended stays before making its way to Texas on Monday morning.

Mary Brower, a high school teacher and Opelousas native, and her husband were in Jamaica celebrating their 10th anniversary when the storm passed over the island.

“Our only concern was getting home, and getting home to my kids cause I missed them greatly," Brower said. "You can only take so much vacation. So yeah, my biggest concern were the delays and when would we would actually get out.”

The couple arrived June 26 and planned to leave July 3, the day Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Jamaica.

"We wanted to go somewhere memorable since it was our 10th anniversary, and this experience was definitely memorable and something we will never forget," said Brower.

With flight cancellations and limited communication between the airport and the resort, the couple had to stay an additional three days at the resort.

Although most of the locals remained calm despite the storm's severity, Brower said she had a few moments of anxiety, especially when much of the area lost power and trees began falling on houses near the resort.

"Our resort had not lost power but many of the property restaurants, and amenities did not have power," Brower said. "There were 16 restaurants on this particular property, some of them couldn't get staffed even if they had power, and we did have two room butlers but one of them we stop seeing completely.

"Shevy, one of our butlers told us before the storm that where she lives, it's prone to landslides which freaked us out."

Brower said the only thing that kept her sane was the amazing staff at the resort. They were able to easily rebook their flight to Saturday.

“We're in probably one of the most beautiful places in the world, we have every accommodation we could possibly want and need. It's just we're ready to go home,” said Brower.

The resort offered everyone who was supposed to leave a free night stay then a discounted rate for any additional nights.

The couple were safely able to fly out on Saturday with only a small delay in Miami.

On Monday, Bery made landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast, bringing in flood, heavy-rain, and damaging winds. The storm was expected to bring heavy rain to north Louisiana as it continued on its northward path.
