Seniors from across the parish celebrated Independence Day a little early on June 28 at the East Feliciana Council on Aging site in Jackson.

Many of the approximately 90 attendees, quite a few dressed in red, white and blue, arrived early to get their favorite table or to visit with friends.

The traditional bean bag baseball game was held followed by something new, a performance by some of the Jackson exercise-class members. They were led by their exercise-class volunteer leader Clover Stephenson, who is also the vice president of the Council on Aging’s board.

The women donned top hats and used pompoms as they moved to the music. Council director Cyndi McManus challenged the Clinton exercise participants to perform at the end-of-the-summer gathering in August.

Several patriotic songs were sung a cappella with Helen Creed leading the crowd. Beginning with "God Bless America," they ended with the "Star Spangled Banner."

A raffle for a painting by Caroline Harrell and an afghan made by Brenda Davis, who attends the ongoing art classes, was held. Funds raised are for art supplies. Art teacher Harrell said the fledgling artists have been asked to display their paintings at the next parishwide gathering in August.

Numerous door prizes were given out.
