An Amtrak train bound for Chicago Union Station travels alongside Interstate 10 in New Orleans, Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021.

A man walking on a set of railroad tracks in a Metairie trainyard was killed Tuesday afternoon after he was hit by an Amtrak train, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The accident occurred about 2:15 p.m. when Amtrak's City of New Orleans hit the victim who was trespassing in the Canadian National train yard located in the 6900 block of Stable Drive, according to the company and Capt. Jason Rivarde, spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office.

"There have been no reported injuries to the 114 passengers or crew onboard," Amtrak said in a statement released Tuesday evening.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office confirmed the victim is a 30-year-old man, but they have not released his name because his family has not yet been notified.

The City of New Orleans train left New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal at 1:45 p.m., bound for Chicago.

The train won't be able to continue underway until a new crew arrives and it is released by law enforcement authorities, according to Amtrak.
