Gonzales police are seeking a person of interest in connection with a late-night drive-by shooting in December that fatally wounded a Darrow man.

According to police, Craig Haynes Jr. was driving a Chevrolet Malibu on South Burnside Avenue about 11 a.m. Dec. 8. A vehicle pulled along the driver's side of the Malibu and someone inside opened fire on Haynes, police said. The shooting took place no more than mile from the police department and Sheriff's Office headquarters buildings and the Ascension Parish Courthouse annex.

After he was shot, Haynes continued north before crashing the Malibu into the Big River gas station parking lot, police said. He was taken to a hospital and died from his wounds the next day.

Police said Friday that detectives are now looking for a suspect car and a person of interest in the shooting.

Jalon Tyrone Brown, 20, is wanted for questioning about Haynes' death. He is described only as a "person of interest." Police said Brown is believed to be staying in Tangipahoa Parish. He has family members in Ascension Parish, but officers said they haven't been cooperating with detectives.

Police are also looking for a light-colored sedan believed to be a 2004 to 2008 Honda Civic. A car close to that description was seen around South Burnside and East Worthy and headed north at the time of the shooting, police said.

Ami Clouatre, police spokeswoman, said officers don't know if the car was directly involved in the shooting.

Police are asking the public for information about the shooting and the identity or whereabouts of any suspects or suspect vehicles.

Residents with information are asked to call Detective Randy Dufrene Jr. at (225) 647-9580, email him at [email protected], or call Capital Region Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
