The detention motion for Sean M. Higgins, charged in the deaths of hockey stars Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, has been postponed.

Originally scheduled to take place virtually at 9 a.m. Sept. 5, Higgins appeared in front of Judge Michael J. Silvanio from a booth at the Salem County Jail before the motion was scheduled for postponement. The motion was rescheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 13, with Silvanio presiding.

Higgins has been charged with two counts of death by auto following the Aug. 29 deaths of the Gaudreau brothers.

The charges against Higgins are only accusations, as he has not been convicted in the case.

What happened to the Gaudreau family?

On Aug. 29, police said, Higgins illegally tried to pass an SUV on the right side of the road, fatally striking the Gaudreau brothers riding bikes on the narrow shoulder.

The brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. Higgins was ordered to remain in Salem County Jail pending his hearing.

Police responding at the scene noted in probable cause documents that Higgins had a "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath" and failed a field sobriety test. The affidavit also reported that Higgins told the officer he'd consumed five to six beers before the accident.

Who is Sean M. Higgins?

Higgins worked at a local rehab, according to his employer.

Gaudenzia — a drug addiction treatment center in the Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland areas — confirmed his employment via Facebook on Aug. 31. Higgins was placed on leave immediately after the incident.

The center didn't clarify whether or not the leave was paid, and comments on the post were limited.
