WA police allege Cable sexually assaulted a girl aged between nine and 10 during 1967 and 1968

The Australian rules footballer Barry Cable has been charged with historical sex offences against a young girl.

Western Australian police allege Cable sexually assaulted a girl aged between nine and 10 during 1967 and 1968.

The 80-year-old has been charged with five counts of indecent dealing with a girl aged under 13 and two counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 13.

Cable was renowned for his football career in the Victorian and Western Australian football leagues between 1962 and 1979.

He was on the winning team in two VFL premierships with North Melbourne and four WAFL premiership sides and won the WAFL’s best and fairest award, the Sandover Medal, three times.

Cable is scheduled to appear in the Perth magistrates court on Thursday.
