Luton go up as Turner sinks Tranmere

Luton Town won automatic promotion to the Championship last night when Brentford's Michael Turner scored the goal that beat Tranmere Rovers at Griffin Park.

Turner's goal in the 69th minute, which left Tranmere in third place in League One on 75 points, catapulted Brentford into the play-off places. They rose three places to fourth on 69 points with a game in hand on the clubs below them.

The Luton manager Mike Newell and his assistant Brian Stein were both at the match.

"We are delighted," Newell said last night. "It has been a fantastic two years and to achieve promotion this year is a really good feeling.

"We did not expect it to go as well as it has. We still have the chance of winning the championship and we need three wins to achieve that so it will be back to business for us and I am sure the supporters will be there in numbers to cheer us on."

Roy Keane has launched a scathing attack on his Manchester United team-mates, saying some are failing to give 100% to the cause. The furious United captain watched Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Norwich on television after being left out of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad to ensure he is fit for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final with Newcastle.

Ferguson has not spoken publicly about the setback. He was so angered by the defeat that he refused all post-match interview requests, including MUTV. But Keane has spoken out. "People are sick of excuses now," he told MUTV. "We are running out of them anyway.

"Everyone needs to look at themselves and ask whether they are giving 100%. I am not sure all the players can say they are. That is a crime in itself."

Louis Saha will miss the semi-final and is probably out for two weeks with a calf injury.
