Clean break

Old Chapel Forge, Chichester

This 17th-century former chapel has been remodelled with all the usual green credentials you'd expect from a winner of the gold award of the Green Tourism Business Scheme. There's solar thermal heating and waste water recycling, and the owners have also included some subtle eco features, such as a sun pipe that funnels natural light into the bathroom and recycled iron drainpipes for water harvesting. It's a shame the building is only yards from a busy road as the rooms have retained the quiet character of the former chapel; the pointed ceilings tower above the bed, and the owner — a blacksmith — has made iron curtain poles and a wardrobe that add to the sense of history.

The owners organise bike hire so you can cycle the 18km Salterns Way from the centre of Chichester to the beach at East Head (conservancy.co.uk). Pagham nature reserve and Chichester harbour are nearby.
