It is not illegal for homeowners to paint the outside of their house, but the law does differ depending on your property.
According to planning rules known as the Permitted Development Rights, owners of non-listed buildings are not required to seek planning permission.
It's worth noting that homeowners wanting to paint the outside of their property are best off choosing a more neutral colour.
If the building is listed or part of a conservation area they have to ask for permission.
