Sainsbury’s to FINALLY let you pay by contactless card in its stores

The modern form of payment has been around in the UK since 2007

AFTER months of speculation and falling behind its competitors - Sainsbury's has finally confirmed it will soon be accepting contactless payment in its stores.

The supermarket giant said the modern form of payment could be introduced in its local branches across the UK as soon as Christmas, with larger stores likely to follow in the new year.

The superstore has been promising contactless payments for a while now but nothing came of it.

A spokeswoman told The Sun today: "Our customers will find an expected item in the bagging areas soon - we are in the process of introducing contactless payments in our stores. It will be in the majority of Sainsbury’s Local stores by Christmas."

Contactless payment, which allows the customer to purchase their goods without having to stick their card in an old chip and pin machine, has been around in the UK since 2007.

However after some initial scepticism it has now become the payment choice for many people, with more than £1billion being spent via contactless methods in January this year alone according to the UK Cards Association.

Sainsbury's revelation follows a number of the other big supermarkets that are introducing their own payment systems.

Tesco has been pushing its own in-house mobile payments app PayQwiq, while Aldi and Lidl both reportedly offer contactless payments already, reports Metro.

Asda pledged its support for Zapp, a mobile payment system which is not tied to one device manufacturer or mobile OS, earlier this year although it is not clear when or if this will be introduced.
