Andrew Jones, 55, whose daughter lives next door, said: "It’s such a terrible tragedy. It’s just so sad.

"We were out at a family christening on Sunday and came in a couple of hours after it happened.

"Everything had gone and just the police remained keeping guard.

Unemployed Paul Galligan, 60, who lived in the flat above, said: "It’s very sad."

He continued: "I was out on Sunday and got in and then five minutes later we had the ambulance and the police cars and they shut the street. I heard nothing before then."

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "They had a first birthday party only a few weeks ago.

"It is such a tragedy."

Across the road at Mi Julie’s Chippy, owner Ali Asgard, 40, and his wife Anna, 50, were shocked by the sad news, but having only taken over the business in May the couple didn’t know the mum, or her children.

Ali said: "I was here for a delivery at around 2pm on Sunday when the small ambulance turned up, then a proper ambulance and then the police.

"The air ambulance put down on the grass beside us, it’s so tragic that the baby died."

A man, who moved to the area about 25 years ago, said: "I helped the lady up the step with her pram once...it’s so sad."

It comes after cops raced to the address on Sunday after receiving a terrifying 999 call after the tot was discovered "not breathing".

An Air Ambulance was deployed to Bonscale Crescent, Middleton, around 2pm.

Despite medics' best efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police cordon remains in place on Monday as officers are stationed outside the home.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 2.05pm on Sunday, 30 June 2024, officers were called to reports of a baby not breathing at an address on Bonscale Crescent in Middleton.
