But it will be brighter in the south with cloud cover increasing through the morning, the Met Office added.

A weather front has moved in overnight bringing persistent rain from 8am onwards to Northern Ireland, parts of western Scotland and north-western England.

Parts of Wales and the south-west may also see some of that rain later on in the day at around 6pm.

Despite the breeze today, temperatures will still climb up to the mid-20s across eastern areas of England.

Elsewhere there will be a fresher feel in the far north with temperatures dropping into the mid-teens across western Scotland by the end of the day.

The rain is going to spread itself south and eastwards into this evening pushing into the south east throughout the night.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: "The UK's weather is transitioning to a less warm, rather more unsettled period in the coming days.

"There's a signal for some more persistent and heavy rain on Thursday  for those in northern and western parts of the UK.

"Some western hills could see in excess of 50 mm of rain through the period, with 15-30 mm of rain likely quite widely in the north and west.

"Those further south and east are likely to see lower rainfall totals in general through the week.

"Winds will also be a notable feature for the time of year, particularly in parts of the west."

Liam Eslick, a meteorologist at the Met Office, added: "Into Thursday we do have a second plume of rain moving in towards the north west of Scotland which can bring some pretty strong winds and pretty heavy rain.

"The south east will probably be the driest part of the country but those temperatures will slowly start to come down towards what we would expect for mid-August, around 22C or 23C."

Tomorrow looks to be a fine and dry day with plenty of sunny spells across the whole of the UK.

However some showers will spread into the far north of Scotland through the afternoon.

Many areas of England and Wales will see temperatures in the low 20s despite the fresher air arriving.

Mr Eslick said there was good news for those with weekend plans as sunny weather is likely to return.

"It will be a mostly dry picture for many people as we go in towards the weekend, most places will see a pretty dry picture and will start to see some sunnier spells," he said.
