PRODUCTS like the MiHigh Infrared Sauna Blanket are what I like to call ‘mini celebrity moments’.

They bring the wellness of the stars into products that we regular folk can use at home among the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We’ve seen it a lot recently with similar at-home wellness products like the celeb-fave Oura Ring fitness tracker and the Derma Wand, which claims to banish wrinkles.

I love self-care, so when I had the chance to try out the MiHigh Sauna Blanket I couldn’t refuse.

Retailing at £399.99, it’s not a cheap piece of kit, so I was keen to do a MiHigh Sauna Blanket review to see if it’s worth it.

MiHIGH Sauna Blanket review: quick summary

If you’re looking for the TLDR; (too long, didn’t read) version of this review, then spoiler alert: I loved the MiHigh sauna blanket and can see it being a staple in my wellness routine.

Since the review period finished, I have found myself reaching for it at least three times a week. Wanting to watch some Netflix? Do it in the blanket. Wanting to listen to an audiobook? That’s right, do it in the blanket.

The main benefit for me was muscle relaxation and detoxification. I would also be in remiss not to mention the calorie-burning effects (although these aren't a replacement for an exercise routine or healthy diet).

MiHIGH Sauna Blanket review: full review

What is MiHIGH?

The MiHigh Infrared Sauna Blanket is a wellness gadget created to provide all the benefits of infrared sauna therapy in the comfort of your own home.

It's designed as a compact, blanket-like device that zips up and wraps around your body, allowing you to experience the soothing effects of infrared heat without the need to knock down your garden shed and replace it with an outdoor sauna.

It's like a spa day and a futuristic cocoon had a love child and created a chic space-age blanket that you can wrap yourself in like a human burrito.

First impressions

As far as tech goes, this was a breeze to set up. It’s plug-and-play; it comes in a compact box packed neatly inside a drawstring travel bag.

I had a quick read through the instructions, which I deemed super important if you are zipping yourself up in a hot blanket for an hour. The power lead plugs into the mains and the blanket, and then you are good to go.

There are handy up and down buttons for both temperature and timing. There is also a speaker button which I found super handy as there were times when I would meditate or listen to an audiobook while having a sauna session. It gives you a quick beep to let you know that time is up.

The instructions tell you to set your temperature and let the blanket heat up for no more than five minutes before zipping yourself in. The ring-pull zip is great because it allows you to easily zip and unzip yourself while in the blanket.

To use the blanket, it’s recommended that you cover your arms and legs and also wear socks. For my first use, I wore running shorts and a compression tee, and while this worked fine, it can get very hot, especially if you are still for a while and then move your arm or leg to another part of the blanket.

By the end of my four-week trial, I was a pro and stuck with running tights and a Lululemon long-sleeved compression shirt, and that seemed to work perfectly for comfort and heat protection, especially if you’re a fidget and struggle to sit still for long periods of time.

Performance

First, I should lay out the testing conditions.

I used this five times a week for a month (excessive, I know, but I don’t need an excuse for self-care). I played around with the time and temperature settings and found my perfect setting was 45 minutes at temperature six, although I started at temperature five for 50 minutes.

For consistency, I used this directly before bed with an occasional morning session on the weekends.

It took me about 10 minutes to start sweating, and when I started, boy did I start. It was a gradual sweat, but by the time I got to the 20-minute mark, I looked like I had just run a thousand-meter sprint on the sun.

One top tip that I found was to put a towel under your head. Unlike a regular sauna where the sweat drips down your face onto the timber ground, in the blanket, it drips down into your hairline and if not for the towel, it would have saturated my silk pillowcase.

What are the benefits of MiHIGH?

The blanket is claimed to have several benefits:

  • Great for relaxation
  • Relieves sore muscles
  • Burns 300-600 calories per session
  • Endorphin release after use
  • Improves blood circulation

The immediate benefit I noticed was the muscle relaxation properties. I have been lifting heavy at the gym recently, and it’s been taking its toll. The DOMS just melted away after around 25 minutes in the blanket, and I felt completely relaxed by the 45-minute mark.

The endorphin rush was another great effect; the cold shower straight after had me ready to take on the world with a fresh and clear mind (or settle down into bed and have a well-rested sleep).

I have TERRIBLE circulation. From the age of 18, I have been getting chilblains from the cold, so doing what I can to increase circulation and prevent that is a must.

As I tried this in the summer, I didn’t see the full benefits of circulation improvement, but I did notice a difference. It certainly gets your heart beating and your blood pumping.

Does a sauna blanket help sleep?

Naturally, as a self-care obsessive, I'm militant about sleep quality. I have tried everything to try and improve my sleep, from magnesium to CBD oil to yoga before bed.

The beauty of the blanket is that it does an amazing job of relaxing tense muscles, so I found that when I did drift off, it was a very comfortable sleep, and I woke up feeling refreshed. I definitely noticed a difference in the nights that I used it compared to the nights I didn’t.

One point that could be a pitfall is that a cold shower after the session is pretty much imperative. By the time you get 40 minutes in, you are watching the clock and ready to get out. You’re dripping wet, and your heart is beating like you’ve just been caught shoplifting.

I love a cold shower (I’m sure any business TikTok or Instagram star will tell you how they get up at 5 AM and have a cold shower to start their day, blah, blah, blah). There is no denying that they can be quite invigorating, but that isn't necessarily what you want right before you go to bed, so I remedied this by switching to warm for the last few minutes of my shower to calm back down.

How many calories do you burn in the MiHIGH?

To me, the claim of burning between 300-600 calories per session seemed too good to be true.

There was no way for me to measure this, but I was very surprised at how lean I looked after using it. If you are someone with high water retention, then this could be great for you before a big event or when you want to look a little learner.

I have a fairly consistent workout routine consisting of weight training two or three times per week with some light cardio sprinkled in. At the end of the four weeks, I was down 5lbs.

I won’t attribute this all to the blanket, as I was also watching my calorie intake, but it definitely helped!

Is a Sauna Blanket better than an Infrared Sauna?

I'm no stranger to saunas, so it was intriguing to see how this fares in comparison to the real deal.

I preferred this over a regular sauna for several reasons. Not having your face inside the blanket makes it bearable for much longer, so you get the extra benefits of a prolonged session.

You're also in the safety and comfort of your own home and can prop your laptop up or lay on the couch at your own leisure and catch up on your favourite shows whilst indulging in a bit of self-care.

There's also the added benefit of avoiding half-naked people who think a towel in a communal sauna is optional (in my opinion, this is absolutely criminal).

When it comes to keeping a consistent temperature, I found that when I moved my arms out of the blanket, the temperature would drop and take a minute or two to come back up to temp.

I didn’t mind as there have been many a time in a regular sauna where the temperature hasn’t been consistent, but it’s something to bear in mind.

I love that you can control the temperature. If it does get too much, then you can turn it down, and if it’s not enough, then you can crank that baby back up. The highest I managed was a seven because I feared I was starting to cook.

The verdict: Is MiHIGH worth it?

For me, absolutely; the MiHigh sauna blanket is worth it.

It’s an expensive bit of kit, but if you are someone who suffers from any of the ailments mentioned (sore muscles, water retention, struggling to relax), then you would get a lot out of it.

I love that it forces a bit of quiet into my loud, and frankly exhausting life; to have an excuse to just do nothing but lay horizontal for 45 minutes and sweat is a real treat.

As far as sauna blankets go, £399.99 is a fairly average price for what you get. There are some priced higher, but they are ranked comparatively to MiHigh, so more expensive doesn't always mean better. If you pay as you go at a sauna currently, then you’ll find that you will make your money back fairly quickly.
