Southgate, 53, left his position following the defeat to Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.
He resigned with a better record than anyone in the job since 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey, winning 61 of his 102 matches during his eight-year tenure.
On top of overseeing England's run to two successive Euros finals - Southgate guided his country to a World Cup semi-final and a World Cup quarter-final.
But having bid farewell to the role, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed that the search for a successor was already underway.
Reports suggest the FA are "very unlikely" to limit themselves to just English managers, while Bullingham revealed that an "interim solution" is in place if required.

So who is most likely to be appointed the next England manager?
There's been a few significant changes in the betting market with Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe drifting from favourite to 9/2.
At the same time, there's been strong market support for Lee Carsley, who's shortened from 10/3 to just 6/4 to get the position on a permanent basis.
Carsley, 50, led England Under-21s as they won the European Championship in 2023 for the first time in 39 years.
And reports suggest the former Everton and Derby midfielder will be installed as interim manager for England's Nations League clashes against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month.
It's worth remembering that caretaker or interim managers must take charge for 10 consecutive competitive matches to be deemed a winner in this betting market.
Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is next at 9/4, ahead of previous frontrunner Howe.
There's a fairly sizeable jump to the remaining candidates with Mauricio Pochettino, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp all tied together at 10/1 with William Hill.
Klopp's odds are expected to drift given the German tactician recently distanced himself from the position.
