Smith, 33, revealed that Snakebite had tried to wind him up prior to their semi-final clash by suggesting he was being carried by world No 1 Humphries.

England eventually hammered their old rivals 8-4 on the way to beating Austria in the final.

Smith said: “We won the quarters and Peter Wright walked past asking Luke how his shoulders were. The guy just averaged 78 and he’s trying to give me s***.

“I was like ‘what are you doing’. He was trying to give it a bit of banter behind stage. Peter you are not good enough mate."

In a dig at Wright finishing rock bottom of the Premier League table, he added: “That guy should have some strong shoulders because he’s been holding the Premier League up for two years.

“He annoyed me today and I think that kind of spurred me on in that semi-final. I’ve never given it that large ever. I needed to get that out because it really annoyed me.

“I’ve never celebrated a double eight checkout that much, even when I won the Worlds. The Grand Slam I fell on the floor but I never give it that large in my life. Now I’m sat here, I’ve got a gold medal finally.

“It feels weird. Luke also said he’s never celebrated so much someone else hitting a double!

“I’ve not felt like that for a long, long time. Well since January of 2023 when I won the Worlds. It’s hard to get the right words out.”

Humphries was unplayable in the final, delivering four incredible ton-plus checkouts of 151, 130, 121 and 112.

He also had a cheeky dig at Australia’s Simon Whitlock for saying England might not work as a pair.

He said: “A lot of other teams weren’t worried about us and said we wouldn’t gel. Fortunately we did. We proved that.

“Sometimes in darts you lose that enjoyment. This year has all been a blur, tiring. I’m winning and it’s still just not registering how well I’m playing.

“I’m just in this zone of playing all the time, it all just becomes a blur.

“These sort of moments, these sort of weekends bring you back up. It gives you that feeling of greatness again.

“This will bring Michael back up again. I think he showed his true champion this weekend, I think he played fantastic.

“It will give him confidence in the World Matchplay but I hope he doesn’t play that well against me. We might become enemies then!

“It wasn’t difficult for me. I felt like every time Michael walked up to the oche he was going to hit a big score and he pretty much did every time.

“Every time I was sat on a finish, he probably thought it was going to go in and it did.

“I felt like we won that in a canter to be honest. We compliment each other really well. Just really happy to bring the trophy back home to England.”
