MANCHESTER UNITED take on Rosenborg today in the first of their pre-season friendly clashes.

Erik Ten Hag's side will want to put a marker down early in the summer as they prepare for the new Premier League season which begins in a month.

  • Red Devils suffer defeat in Norway

A late goal from Noah Holm won the game for the hosts.

They deserved the victory having struck the woodwork on numerous occasions throughout the match.

It was not an inspiring display to make Man Utd fans feel that this season is going to be any different from the last.

  • Boss struggles to find positives

Speaking with MUTV after the game, Erik ten Hag changed tact from his 'positive outlook' vibes from last season's interviews post-defeat:

The performance was below standard. If you cannot win the game, it is important not to lose it. He [Vitek] got the opportunity to make all those saves from the team. We can talk that everything is good, when it is bad, but I am not that guy. They had a much higher fitness level but teams from Man Utd should do a lot better.

  • Fans will want to see more

When it comes to the start of the domestic season, Man Utd fans will not be paying the costly price of modern-day tickets to see 'good attitudes'.

It is difficult to take much from a pre-season game with so many first team players still on holiday but tactically, Erik ten Hag's side looked anything but solid at the back.

For Red Devils fans, they will be hoping the owners saw more in their manager than just offering a contract for beating Man City in the FA Cup final.

  • Veteran defender reflects on defeat

Speaking with MUTV after the final whistle, the Northern Ireland centre-back gave an overview on the game against Rosenborg:

It was a good workout for us. They were quite sharp and aggressive. It was good for us to get through to half-time at nil-nil. We are trying to get fitness out of the games. The most important thing was our good attitude.

  • FT: Rosenborg 1-0 Man Utd

It is a well-deserved win for Rosenborg in Trondheim.

They struck the woodwork four times and finally found the back of the net with the last kick of the game.

No doubt Erik ten Hag will find positives to talk about, he managed to after dire defeats last season, but at least this was only a pre-season friendly.

Literally with the last kick of the game the hosts get their goal.

As the cross came in, the striker swivelled to shoot but it struck Holm as he turned his back to it.

It dropped nicely into his path and he drilled his shot past Vitek to seal victory for the Norwegians.

Some good footwork from Volden before he looks to shoot from outside the box.

He cannot keep his effort down as it sails over the target.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    86. How on earth Rosenborg are not leading baffles the mind.

A cross is drilled into the box and three Man Utd defenders miss the ball before it comes to Holte at the back post.

He hits his shot straight at Vitek when you feel either side of the keeper and it would have been a goal.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    84. These players out on the pitch now are really playing for their place on the plane to America.

As the majority of the pre-season matches take place stateside, ten Hag will be seeing what youngsters deserve to be on that flight along with his first team squad.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    82. Not too sure what Erik ten Hag can take from this game.

Vitek has impressed in goal but, in the main, all of his saves have been ones you would expect a keeper to make.

He looks a favourite to win the 'man of the match' award.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    80. A wild pass back to Vitek almost catches him out.

Holte puts in a sliding challenge to block his eventual clearance and it goes out for a goal kick.

Man Utd are giving the ball away with regularity now.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    78. Sandberg is down and seems to have an injury.

This would be a blow for Rosenborg as they do not have another keeper to bring on.

It seems to be a knee injury for the young Norwegian.

The magic spray does its trick and he is able to continue.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    76. The hosts manage to force another corner.

Man Utd initially manage to clear their lines but Rosenborg recycle it well with another cross into the danger area.

Despite being under no pressure, Fletcher takes no chances as he heads it behind for a corner.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    74. Rosenborg will be keen to try and get the goal they deserve from their performance today.

Struggling in their domestic league, it could act as a real springboard for the rest of their season to beat Man Utd.

The atmosphere in the stadium at the moment is akin to Manchester library.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    72. That was a great save by Sandberg as the ball moved viscously in the air.

Bennett is penalised for a foul in the middle of the park.

Frederiksen has the ball down the right once again and this time puts in a teasing ball into the box but nobody can get onto the end of it.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    70. Frederiksen runs along the byline and shows his greedy nature once again as he shoots from an impossible angle.

He strikes the outside of the post but had far better options in the middle.

Man Utd counter-attack and Ennis strikes a shot from some distance which is beaten away by the Rosenborg keeper.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    68. Man Utd are passing the ball around at the back constantly.

There seems to be no outball and they often lose possession.

Rosenborg are dominating this ssecond half now.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    66. That is the third time Rosenborg have hit the woodwork in this game.

On the balance of play, the Norwegians fully deserve to win this game.

They have just under half an hour to find that elusive goal.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    64. It is a new sight in the Red Devils dug out for this season, seeing Ruud van Nistelrooy sat alongside Erik ten Hag.

He will no doubt get a huge reception for his first game at Old Trafford.

Rosenborg cross the ball and Borkeeiet hits it first time and Vitek tips the shot onto the post.

Man Utd are trying to play their way out of trouble all of the time.

It is having contrasting fortunes as some of the time they are being pickpocketed of the ball.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    60. Rosenborg look to set to make about eight changes.

Meanwhile Frederiksen takes on Collyer and the ball goes out of play.

The assistant signals for a goal kick but it clearly came off the Man Utd defender last.

Nice to see that the officials in Norway are just as competent as our own Premier League would-be clowns.

  • Rosenborg 0-0 Man Utd

    58. Amass gives the ball away and Man Utd almost pay the ultimate price.

Fortunately for the visitors Rosenborg take the wrong option as the player looks to shoot instead of squaring it to any of a host of players waiting to slot it home.

Big let off for Erik ten Hag's side.
