The victorious star poignantly said: "It was really a beautiful race for me.

"Mum is watching up there, and she’s really, really happy. I didn’t want to put the date of her death, because I’ll get emotional.

"I took about three weeks to a month without doing anything. It wasn’t really clicking for me that she’s really gone.”

Team USA star Kenny Bednarek claimed silver, while Lyles earned bronze - despite running with Covid.

After the race, a spokesperson for the USA Track & Field said: "We can confirm that Noah Lyles tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, August 6th.

"In response, the USOPC and USATF swiftly enacted all necessary protocols to prioritise his health, the well-being of our team, and the safety of fellow competitors.

"Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety of Team USA athletes while upholding their right to compete.
