THE OLYMPICS closing ceremony descended into chaos after athletes invaded the stage - before getting a telling off.

A month's worth of thrills in the French capital came to a close to officially bring an end to the 2024 Paris Games.

And the customary closing ceremony marked the end of the Olympics at the Stade de France.

But the amazing scenes of celebration quickly turned into outright bedlam when a group of excited athletes stormed the stage.

Amazingly, a PA announcement said: “Dear athletes, please leave the stage.”

Broadcaster Andrew Cotter said with a laugh: "We've had some rogue athletes invading the stage."

United States topped the medal table, with 40 golds, 44 silvers and 42 bronzes.

Team GB took home a total of 65 medals, with 14 golds, 22 silvers and 29 bronzes.

The Brits end seventh in the standings, tallying their lowest return of golds in 20 YEARS.

GB won 20 golds in Tokyo, 27 in Rio, 29 at London 2012 and 19 at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

The Olympics in Athens in 2004 was the last time Team GB won fewer than in Paris, with a total of nine gold medals.

But 2024's total of 65 is the same number they achieved at London 2012 and one more than the 64 they earned in Tokyo three years ago.

French swimmer Leon Marchand walked away with the most gold medals in the Paris Games, taking four and one bronze to finish with a total of five.
