Natalie Sawyer: Britain’s dazzling stars at the Winter Olympics are perfect role models for women in sport

THE winter Olympics has thrown up tears and more tears for Team GB stars.

Tears of joy for Lizzie Yarnold and tears of despair for the desperately unlucky Elise Christie.

Gold for Yarnold is the incredible culmination of a roller-coaster year for the 29-year-old from Sevenoaks in Kent.

She is now undoubtedly our greatest ever Winter Games athlete and is a fantastic role model for women in sport.

The ‘down to earth’ Skeleton racer celebrated her gold medal not by going out partying but by knitting a jumper in bed.

Christie suffered more Olympic despair after being disqualified in the heats of 1,000 metre speed skating.

She seems to have the luck of someone hit by lightning twice; Sochi four years ago was tragic, now the events of PyeongChang are heart-breaking.

Despite her failings at the past two Winter Olympic Games, Christie remains one of Britain's best ever winter athletes and she has vowed to be back in four years’ time for another shot at gold.

I have been so impressed with the 27-year-old Scot.

She pulled off an incredible ‘Pistol -Shot’ in the penultimate end against Canada that was crucial in booking Team GB’s place in last four.

Now our girls Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, Lauren Gray and Eve Muirhead are going for gold, they face Sweden on Friday for a place in the final.

Record audiences are likely to tune in for the semi-final.
