AFTERTALE

Undertale developer reveals that long-awaited follow-up is ‘just a matter of time’

The next two Deltarune chapters now have a release window

UNDERTALE is one of the biggest success stories in the gaming industry.

Released in 2015, Undertale was developed by solo developer, Toby Fox, and people couldn’t wait for more of their games.

Fox went on to develop Deltarune, a long-awaited follow-up to Undertale with a similar art style and quirky sense of humour.

Undertale stood out to fans, and it played with their perceptions, constantly surprising them while still having an emotional story at its heart.

Deltarune features new characters, story, and also a brand-new turn-based battle system.

It was to be split into five chapters with each being a similar size to that of Undertale.

However, the five chapters would link together and tell the same story across the games.

The first chapter was released for free in 2018, with the plan to charge for the next four chapters of the game.

However, Toby Fox released Chapter 2 for free as well, saying, “the world has been really tough for everybody recently” when it launched in 2021.

People have been waiting not only to play the rest of Deltarune, but also to pay Fox for his game.

Fox revealed that Chapter 3 and 4 would be released simultaneously, and it appears that both chapters are almost complete.

According to a report by GamesRadar, Fox has released a newsletter giving a timeline for the chapters’ release.

Fox says he has “personally completed everything [he] can actively do” and that the chapters have now been handed off for localisation into Japanese and to fix bugs.

He said professional PC testing for Chapter 3 will start in mid-October 2024, while Chapter 4 will be a little longer.

However, both chapters are apparently “essentially complete” and only require finishing touches, and his main objective moving forward is Chapter 5.

Fox concludes: “Chapter 3 and 4 are real! Now, it’s just a matter of time!”

From the timelines that Fox has given for QA and localisation we can assume that the chapters will be released in early 2025.

A late-2024 release could be possible, but feels unlikely as both chapters won’t pass through QA until late in the year.
