However, their popularity also means they're incredibly expensive places to stay.

Luckily, there are plenty of other Greek islands that offer similar experiences, but for a fraction of the cost.

One such place is Agistri, a small island just an hour away from Athens by ferry.

Much like the rest of Greece's islands, it has stunning seas, quaint little towns and amazing places to eat delicious Greek food.

And yet, its status as a lesser-known holiday option make it an affordable option for people to visit.

That's according to travel experts Culture Trip, who put it top of their list of the cheapest Greek islands to visit this year.

They were full of praise for its beaches and hiking trails, while also speaking highly of how easy it is to reach.

They wrote: "If you’re looking for a quick escape from Athens, Agistri is your best bet. Far more affordable than nearby Aegina, this tiny island lies only a 60-minute ferry ride from Piraeus port.

"Stroll through Skala village among fuchsia bougainvillaea and rest in one of the cafes lining the main road. Forests carved with hiking trails and dreamy beaches abound here – don’t miss snorkelling in the pool-like waters of pine-fringed Aponisos.

"Get a feel for laid-back island life with a stay at Saronis, where homemade jam and pastries are served for breakfast in the garden. Book a day cruise from Athens to get a taste of Agistri, as well as nearby Moni and Aegina."

One of the most obvious ways in which people can save money on Agistri is with accommodation, with Sun Travel finding hotel rooms for two from around £26 per night.

Meanwhile, a meal on the island can be bought for around £15 per person, including a starter and main, while a beer can be bought for around £2.

What's more, the island's small size means that paying for transport or car hire isn't necessary, with FerryHopper listing it among their top 10 affordable Greek holiday destinations.

They wrote: "Agistri is one of the best islands for quick weekend getaways from Athens, as the ferry trip from the port of Piraeus takes only 1-1.5 hours.
