While his fame has potentially made it difficult for him to meet someone genuine, Rylan came up with a nifty way to get around it on holiday one time.

During an appearance on Mel Giedroyc Unforgivable, Rylan opened up about his alter ego, Josh.

Mel said: "Rylan, you are very recognisable. Does that mean you can't get away with doing naughty stuff in public?"

He replied: "Yes and no. I have had some naughtiness abroad, but not as Rylan.

"I went away for the first time on my own, got on a plane by myself and was like 'I'm doing this to find myself', I wasn't, I was doing it to find a man."

He continued: "I started talking to someone in a bar, and this guy was like 'What's your name?' and without even planning or thinking I said 'Joshua'.

"And he went 'Nice to meet you Joshua, what do you do?' and at the time I was going through a divorce so I just went, 'I'm a family lawyer'.

"So for three days I was Josh the family lawyer, and I got away with it, up until the last night when I met some of his friends and we all went for dinner and I just heard 'Oh my God, not Rylan!', a British hen party ruined it."

It isn't the only surprising revelation Rylan makes on the show, which airs on Dave and UKTV Play.

The star recalled how he jetted to Majorca for a residency at a beachside club shortly after finding fame on The X Factor in 2012.

But after a fellow performer rubbed him up the wrong way by being rude to staff backstage, Rylan decided to get revenge.

He said: “I used to fly there every Tuesday, perform three songs and fly back.

"I had the residency on the Tuesday, and another ‘pop star’ had the residency on the Wednesday.

“I asked what that person was like, and they said, ‘He treats us all like s**t and he’s really, really rude to people’.

“Every week he’d have the same bottle of whisky and only have one drink from it – so on my last night I found said bottle of whisky and I topped it up myself.

“I got a video the following day of said pop star drinking from the bottle...It was wee-sky.”

Mel Giedroyc Unforgivable starts tonight at 10pm on Dave and UKTV Play.
