I was hurt and embarrassed when fans bellowed out a sex chant about me after David’s red card, says Victoria Beckham

VICTORIA Beckham has told how a woman offered her a Polo mint as 75,000 footie fans bellowed out a crude sex chant about her.

The words — yelled in front of her and husband David — were repeated across grounds in the wake of his red card in the 1998 World Cup.

In a Netflix documentary, Victoria says the foul-mouthed song was “embarrassing” and “hurtful”.

She adds: “I remember sitting down and the lady next to me turned to me and didn’t know what to say, and said, ‘Do you want a Polo?’.

“Do I want a Polo? We did not know what to do. It felt like we were drowning.”

David, 48, recalls: “Every football fan sang this song.”

He was sent off during a last-16 game against Argentina in 1998 — which England lost on penalties.

The backlash against him is discussed in the new four-part series.

The midfielder faced death threats and threats to kidnap his then-baby son Brooklyn.

Manchester United receptionist Kathy Phipps even found bullets sent in letters.

Mum-of-four Victoria, 49, adds: “Imagine having a baby, and having death threats and David having to play knowing this is all going on.”

David has told The Telegraph he never sought therapy for his depression at the time.

He explained: “I was brought up in the East End of London.

“If I’d said to my dad, ‘I need therapy’, he’d have said, ‘What for?’. So I put my head down and worked harder.”
