There was a time when pulled-up socks were the ultimate fashion sin, more associated with retirement homes than catwalks.

But the once boring accessory has now become a sexy style statement.
Even wearing socks with sandals, once a major sartorial faux pas, is one of this season’s hottest looks.
This is the summer of the sock.
Not only are they a cheap way to update your wardrobe they have appeared on multiple runways too, with Gucci models teaming striped sports socks with loafers.

Miu Miu, the number one fashion brand in the world based on Lyst Index’s first quarterly report, also sent models down the summer catwalk in mid-calf socks paired with micro mini skirts.
Miu Miu socks don’t come cheap though — a plain pink pair comes in at £400.
While The Row is selling pairs for £210.
This makes Gucci’s socks a bargain at £150.

Fashion bible Vogue has said that socks can make or break your outfit this summer and John Lewis claims sales are up 90 per cent on this time last year.
Sales of all socks have risen by 66 per cent in the past six months.
And celebrities are fuelling the trend.
In sunny Los Angeles and on the hottest of days here in the UK, A-listers have been pulling their knee-high woollies up.
These are dubbed the “cocktail sock” for evening wear and red carpet dos.
Actress Sydney Sweeney, 26, and former EastEnder Maisie Smith, 23, have opted for sultry ten denier nylons with their short hemlines, while singer Sabrina Carpenter, 25, prefers white sports socks with heeled sandals and a mini skirt.
The Crown’s Emma Corrin, 28, dug out her old school ankle socks when promoting the film Deadpool & Wolverine.
And it’s not just the under-30s covering their ankles.
Top Boy star Saffron Hocking, 30, kept her ankles covered as she hit Glastonbury this year, as did Cara Delevingne, 32, and 28-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy.
Taylor Swift, 34, touched down in London for the final leg of her tour in Europe and went to private members’ club Annabel’s wearing platform Mary Janes on her never-ending legs paired with stark white socks.
Actress Rosamund Pike, 45, added black nylons to her heels for a Dior couture fashion show, and Serena Williams, 42, swapped her tennis socks for primary school frillies at Paris Fashion Week.
Even if you’re knocking about at home, don’t reach for the fuzzy-now-bobbly Primark pair with a gaping hole at the toe.
Follow 37-year-old model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s lead and lounge around in sheer pop socks for the ultimate at-home seduction look.
It’s all very silly, but thankfully there are no rules.
Aside from the fact that your no-show, shoe-liner socks must never be seen, you can get away with any style or length.
And, importantly, any shoe — so that means no need to splash out on new footwear.
You’d give your grandad stick for wearing socks and sandals, but turns out we should respect our elders.
They were right all along.
