A MAJOR British car brand has released the fastest charging EV ever made, powering up in less than 15 minutes.

The model beat out ten other rivals to claim the top spot by a country mile.

The new Lotus Emeya was found to deliver a peak power of a whopping 402kW at public chargers in the latest P3 Charging Index.

That's around 80 more than the next best EV, the Xpeng G9, at 320kW.

It also beat out high-end offerings like the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model Y and Mercedes EQS

The Lotus averaged 331kW across the charge, allowing it to surge from 10% to 80% (which is the recommended range to maintain for battery health) in just 14 minutes.

That makes it the fastest charging electric car ever released for general sale.

Lotus also benefitted from an extra 100kw of charging capacity, providing the Emeya with a huge 379-mile range.

And you can cover that distance in no time with a 603 horsepower dual motor setup and automatic gearbox that allows it to top out at 155mph.

The brand has boldly dubbed its creation a "future classic" and says it offers "class-leading" performance and style.

Feng Qingfeng, CEO of the Lotus Group, said: "Bringing together our rich heritage with intelligent performance and the latest cutting-edge technologies, we’re pushing the boundaries for how a luxury electric vehicle should look and handle– making it truly for the drivers."

Ben Payne, the group's VP of design, added: "This is a Lotus like you have never seen before.

"We’ve built on everything Lotus has achieved so far to create a luxury performance car for the drivers, designed to inspire confidence, exhilarate with raw emotion and pure joy – connecting them to the road."

However, all that power and convenience does come at a price.

The base model Emeya starts at £94,950, rising to £107,450 for the sporty S variant and £129,950 for the range-topping R.

That's almost £10,000 more than the 190mph Taycan and £50,000 more than the entry-level Model Y.

It comes after we took a look inside "Hollywood mechanic" Sydney Sweeney's incredible vintage car collection.
