A HYPERCAR has shattered the record to become the world's fastest EV after reaching an eye-watering speed.

The mind-being, 1985 horsepower monster left the Rimac Nevera, which previously held the crown, in the dust.

In a stunning performance on the Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP) track in Germany, the Aspark OWL claimed the title by a huge margin.

The OWL was first unveiled in 2017 and put into production in 2020.

Only 50 were ever made, with the standard version starting from £2.4 million.

The Japanese firm also produced an ultra-limited edition with a fully carbon fibre body for £2.9 million apiece.

In its successful world record attempt, the speedster was recorded at an eye-watering 272.61mph on June 8.

That blitzed the mark set by the Nevera, which clocked 258mph back in November 2022.

Although, Rimac can still hold onto the fact that their car remains atop the mountain when it comes to the fastest speed set in reverse.

The OWL achieved the feat just weeks after collecting two other records while over in the UK.

It scooped the gongs as the fastest EV over an eighth of a mile and a quarter mile at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire.

Aspark CEO Masanori Yoshida said: "We wanted to show that the Owl is not only a beautiful looking machine but it can demonstrate high amazing acceleration and speed delivered by its powerful motors."

However, despite its impressive achievement, the owl still lags behind in the table for the fastest car overall when internal combustion models are taken into account.

That title is currently held by the Bugatti Chiron Supersport 300+ which was recorded at 304mph before it was discontinued this year.

That record could also be set to tumble, though, as Danish manufacturer Koenigsegg claims its Jesko Absolut model can smash the long-targeted 310mph barrier.

It comes after an iconic sports car worth £200,000 was found after being left to rot in a barn for nearly 30 years.
