Man, 40s, dies after horror two-vehicle smash in Offaly on Valentine’s Day as urgent appeal issued

Gardai raced to the scene after reports of a crash involving a car and an SUV.

The car driver, a man aged in his 40s, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment for serious injuries following the smash.

Sadly, he has since passed away as a result of his injuries.

The female driver of the SUV, aged in her 40s, was taken to the same hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

Her injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening at the time.

A spokesperson said: "Gardai are investigating a fatal two-vehicle road traffic collision involving a car and an SUV, that occurred on the R401 at Coolygagen, Co. Offaly, on Wednesday 14th February 2024 at approximately 8.50am.

"A male passenger in the car, aged in his 40s, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment for serious injuries. He has since been pronounced deceased.

"The female driver of the SUV, aged in her 40s, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment for serious injuries, believed to be non-life-threatening at the time.

"Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R401 in the Coolygagen area, between 8am and 9am on Wednesday 14th February 2024, are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527 730, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Meanwhile, a man, aged in his 30s, has died in hospital after he was hit by a car in Co Mayo on Tuesday.

Gardai and emergency services raced to the scene involving a car and two pedestrians on Lord Edward Street in Ballina at around 6:25pm.

Young girl hurt

A young girl was also injured in the crash after a car collided with two pedestrians on the street but has since been released from hospital.

The 33-year-old pedestrian was “seriously injured” and taken to Mayo University Hospital but sadly passed away this evening, gardai have confirmed.

The local Coroner has been informed, and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination

An examination was carried out by the Garda forensic team.

Gardai in Ballina are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
