The alert, which will be in place for Dublin, Louth, Meath and Wicklow, will kick in from 10pm tomorrow.

Met Eireann warned that heavy rain may cause spot flooding in some areas and confirmed that the warning will remain in place until 6am on Saturday morning.

The weather bosses have also warned that this weekend will bring "unseasonably windy" conditions alongside thunderstorms, sunny spells and scattered showers.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather this morning said: "Some early sunny spells this morning with a windy and mixed ahead of sunny spells and scattered showers but parts of East could hold dry.

"A risk of thunderstorms tomorrow Friday, which sadly could be bad timing for those attending gigs in Dublin if current weather model output is correct."

He added: "The search for summer goes on."

The miserable weather is bad news for fans heading to Hozier's sold out Marlay Park gig tomorrow evening.

The sold out gig kicks off from 4pm on Friday - but it looks set to be a wash out for fans.

Met Eireann's Rebecca Cantwell advised that the next few days are set to bring "plenty of showers," which are set to turn heavy on Friday - some thunderstorms are also possible.

She said: "Today is going to be a breezy and blustery day.

"There will be unseasonably windy times, especially in Ulster in a moderate to fresh gusty westerly wind, and that will be strong along coasts.

"It will be a mix of sunshine and showers today, but it will turn very dull and dump over parts of Cork and Kerry later on."

The weather expert said clouds will increase in the southwest, with temperatures ranging between 14C to 18C.

Rebecca added: "Rain will clear in the south tonight, giving some clear spells.

"It will generally be a dry night apart from just isolated showers in parts of north Ulster."

Any remaining showers will die out early, leaving a dry night with clear spells.

And the temperature won't go below 7C to 10C overnight, with winds easing light steadily or variable overnight.

WEEKEND WOES

Friday looks to start mainly dry before slow moves of scattered showers from the west, with showers turning heavy in a light southwest or variable breeze.

There is the chance of thunderstorms and spot flooding with the highest temperatures of 14C to 17C.

The weekend will bring further sunshine and showers after a mostly dry start to Saturday.

Clouds and rain will linger in the East at first, but elsewhere, the morning will be mostly dry with sunny spells.

Showers in the north and west will extend to most areas through the afternoon and evening.

The highest temperatures are 13 to 17 degrees with a light to moderate west to northwest wind.

Again, showers are set to continue on Sunday, the heaviest and most frequent over the country's northern half.
