Starmer is in line to become the new British Prime Minister as the Labour party secured 410 seats overnight, with an overall majority of 170 in the House of Commons.

Taoiseach took to X, formerly Twitter, to congratulate Starmer on a "comprehensive victory" in the UK election.

He wrote: "I look forward to working with you as close neighbours and friends. The relationship between Ireland and the UK is deep and consequential.

"I look forward to it going from strength to strength."

Labour leader Keir Starmer said after winning that people across the country had "spoken, and they're ready for a change, to end the politics of performance."

"We did it," Starmer said in a victory speech.

He added: "Today, we start the next chapter, begin the work of change, the mission of national renewal and start to rebuild our country.

"The change begins right here because this is your democracy, your community and your future.

"You have voted. It is now time for us to deliver."

Starmer is set to become the first opposition leader to lead the UK, ending 14 years of Conservative government as Tories have suffered the worst performance in the party's long history.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald told RTÉ's Morning Ireland that one of this election's biggest opportunities is to "reset" Irish-British relationships.

She added: "I hope that Keir Starmer will avail of the political space and mandate that he has to repeal the legacy legislation and to reset that relationship.

"To honour the Good Friday Agreement in its totality and to work in real partnership with all of us to make life better for people in the North and right across the country.

"People here in the North really suffered under Tory austerity, the damage has been real and lasting and there will be a job of work... to make the case for proper sustainable funding for public services in this part of Ireland.

"That will be work for all of us."
