The incident took place at the crossroads of the N60 and N83 roads where a man was allegedly attempting to steal goods from the side of a house.

The man was then said to be been by the side where he had stockpiled the goods.

A van then pulled up outside the property to collect the thief and the items he had attempted to steal, but the owner of the goods allegedly jumped up and shot a hole in the engine of the van before they took off.

The van then only made it a small journey before breaking down, where there two men fled the scene through a nearby field.

Armed Gardaí later appeared in Ballyhaunis following reports of the incident.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying: “Gardaí are investigating a burglary at a premises in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo this afternoon, Thursday, 11 July.

“It is understood a firearm was discharged during the course of the incident. No injuries have been reported at this time.”

Gardaí confirmed that investigations into the shooting are ongoing.

This comes after Gardaí discovered numerous weapons stashed in bushes nearby a Dublin site designated for asylum seekers.

The discovery was made close to the entrance to the Thornton Hall site in North Dublin on Monday.

During the search, cops found an axe, metal poles, a knife and other implements.

The site was planned to open last month but was postponed due to several protests.
