RAIN is expected to batter Ireland over the weekend before a major switch on Tuesday brings "mainly dry" conditions and "sunny spells".

Met Eireann have confirmed that it will remain warm as "generally unsettled" weather grips the country, with a chance of spot flooding possible on Saturday.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said there is "still some uncertainty" around the timing of rain on Saturday.

He added: "But it is looking wet to very wet Friday night into Saturday morning.

"Some models have the rain clearing east by around lunch but others delay it into evening. Sunday looking better in East with only some showers but rain approaching the west."

He confirmed that this morning conditions are "soft but very mild" with wet conditions continuing in eastern areas.

The weather will brighten up in the west this afternoon and slowly extend to the east.

Met Eireann bosses confirmed that temperatures will be at their highest between 16C and 21C today.

The forecast said: "Today will start off cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle in most areas.

"Brighter weather will develop in the west later this morning and will extend eastwards this afternoon and evening. Eastern areas will stay cloudy and damp all day."

Tonight, any lingering rain or drizzle in the east will clear and it will be become "largely dry" with clear spells.

A few patches of mist and fog may develop, with temperatures at their lowest between 8C and 13C. It will be coldest in the west.

Tomorrow will be "mainly dry with some bright or sunny spells" and highest temperatures between 16C and 22C - but cloud will "gradually increase" from the west.

Rain will develop on the west coast by early evening and spread into western parts of Ulster, Connacht and Munster.

Looking towards the weekend, Met Eireann said: "Generally unsettled with rain or showers at times. Daytime temperatures will range from about 16C to 22C."

Friday night will be cloudy with rain "becoming widespread and turning heavy at times." It will be mild and humid with temperatures of 13C to 15C.

Saturday morning will be wet with rain in most areas.

'SUNNY SPELLS AND SHOWERS'

The rain will be "heavy at time with spot flooding possible" and will gradually clear eastwards through the afternoon and evening.

Met Eireann warned that "sunny spells and a few showers" would follow as temperatures reach their highest between 15C and 20C.

Saturday night will be cooler and fresher with clear spells and a few showers in the west as temperatures drop to their lowest between 8C and 11C.

Sunday will start off "mainly dry", but rain will develop in the west during the morning and then spread eastwards to all areas through the afternoon and evening as temps reach their best between 15C and 19C.

It will gradually clear overnight with scattered showers following.

Looking towards conditions next week, Met Eireann chiefs confirmed that the weather could take a turn for the positive on Tuesday before another major switch.

The weather bosses said: "Monday will be a bright, fresh day with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 16C to 21C with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

"At the moment, Tuesday looks like being mainly dry with sunny spells and highs of 17C to 20C.

"However, more rain is expected to move in from the west on Wednesday."
