SHIRT SHRIFT

Roy Keane’s choice of shirt divides opinion with one fan comparing it to ‘dulux colour chart’

ON AN evening when the on-pitch action was a bit monotone and bland, Roy Keane's choice of shirt livened up proceedings.

The Ireland legend opted for a multi-shade short sleeve shirt on another balmy evening in Qatar.

And much like how whatever he says generates a major reaction, the same was true for him simply going with a more out there choice of shirt than normal.

Among the deluge of tweets, Paul said: "Roy Keane wearing a dulux colour chart tonight."

While someone else was a bit more harsh: "Roy Keane wearing a shirt that looks like he stapled three carpet samples together."

Glenn went with: "Why’s Roy Keane wearing a shirt like a tub of neopolitan ice cream?"

And in a close runner-up for best tweet of the night, Matt added: "Roy Keane is now coordinating his shirt with his beard."

Cork's most famous son was at his best in the aftermath of England's drab 0-0 draw with USA.

He didn't quite eviscerate them for the disappointing performance which will take a lot of air out of the English balloon.

However, he did get a customary dig in at ITV colleagues Ian Wright and Gary Neville who had talked up the team spirit present around the team hotel where the players happily played darts together.

When it was gently put to him by host Mark Pougatch that the 10 pm local time kick-off might have factored into them being knocked out of their rhythm, Keane dismissed the notion.

He said: "We will be here all night making excuses.

"That goes for all of the teams, it's part of being a professional footballer.

"These players travel all over Europe playing in different conditions and different systems.

"They were playing darts last night! Before the game they were a great bunch of players.

"They didn't show their quality, but that happens. We're not here to crucify the players.

"They will move onto the next game and be fine. They need to do better because tonight wasn't good enough."

HOME GROUND

Back home, the RTE panel made no effort to cover up what was another letdown showing by one of the big guns.

It was Chelsea speedster Christian Pulisic who came closest to unlocking the deadlock late on in the first half.

The nippy forward smacked the crossbar with a snapshot that looked to have caught Jordan Pickford and England's backline by surprise.

In co-commentary, Ray Houghton noted how USA were continually finding it easier to break the press than their counterparts.

This led to them certainly having the better of general play as well as what chances there were going in a fairly one-paced and forgettable occasion overall.
