On the new series, five pairs of friends or relatives head out on a long and arduous journey across the world.

Starting in North Japan, they have to leave behind smartphones, internet and WiFi access and they bank cards.

They have to race across 15,000 kilometres in several countries in a competition to win £20,000 in cash.

In the first episode, the teams were challenged to travel to Lombok as they were tasked with getting from Sapporo to Nara City.

A savage twist saw travel on the famous bullet trains prohibited in a move that was branded 'genius' by fans online.

Each team also only has a limited budget as they race against the others in an attempt to get to each location.

But fans of the show think that this could be the most chaotic series yet as one mother-and-daughter duo were not afraid to splash the cash.

Teacher Eugenie, 61, and trainee clinical scientist Isabel, 25, apparently failed to remember that the money they had for travel was not an unlimited sum.

Although they were the first team to arrive at the first location, but this was after spent over £40 for a taxi that lasted hours.

This is opposed to preserving their resources to visit countries such as Vietnam and South Korea.

Race Across the World viewers stunned by brutal rule change as series returns

In just five days, the duo already made their way through a huge 32 per cent of their budget.

Isabel explained: "We both thought the race would be a good way to connect with one another."

Alarm bells rang for viewers of Race Across The World and the fans were quick to take to social media, as they slammed the pair for using the show for a 'free holiday' on the publicly funded corporation.

One viewer fumed: "80% LEFT ALREADY? Gosh this series will be the most chaotic yet #RaceAcrossTheWorld."

"Jeeze their haemorrhaging money #RaceAcrossTheWorld," stated a second fan.

A third user fumed: "‘Eugenie and Isabel just wanted a 5 day holiday to Japan and have managed to get the BBC to pay for it. Fair play to them tbh. #RaceAcrossTheWorld’

A fourth simply stated: "Eugenie and Isabel #RaceAcrossTheWorld", alongside a GIF of the scene in the Wolf Of Wall Street when Leonardo DiCaprio's character flicked a large pile of notes.

"At the rate Eugenie and Isabel won’t be able to afford to leave Japan… 🤦🏻‍♂️ #RaceAcrossTheWorld," wrote a fifth sarcastically.

And a sixth added: "Just wondering if Eugenie and Isabel are even going to make the end of this episode 🤔 #RaceAcrossTheWorld."
