HUGH Grant has added another string to his bow for his role as Jeremy Thorpe in BBC Drama A Very English Scandal.

But how long did it take him to learn the violin? Here's everything you need to know...

Can Hugh Grant play the violin?

Hugh Grant had to learn how to play the violin specifically for his role in A Very English Scandal.

In the scene, Jeremy Thorpe, a disgraced MP is showing off to his lover Norman Scott during a visit to the model's mother's home.

Despite having had no previous experience with the instrument Hugh managed to master the classical piece in just three months!

He was warned that it would normally take about 12 years to learn the song.

What other roles has Hugh Grant played instruments in?

This won't be the first time that Hugh has rised to the challenge of learning an instrument for a role.

In 2007 he starred alongside Drew Barrymore in the film Music And Lyrics.

For his role as a has-been pop star he learned to sing, play the piano, dance and studied the mannerisms of prominent musicians.

In the 2002 comedy About A Boy, Hugh played Will Freeman and plays a duet with Nicolas Hoult singing.

In preparation for the role Hugh received guitar lessons from British composer Paul Englishby.

When does A Very English Scandal start on BBC and what's it about?

The BBC drama launched on Sunday 20 May, 2018.

There will be three hour-long episodes and it is based on John Preston's novel of the same name.

It tells the shocking true story of Jeremy Thorpe, a disgraced member of parliament who in 1979 was tried but later acquitted of conspiring to murder his ex-lover Norman Scott.

Jeremy was an accomplished violinist as well as an MP and died in 2014 aged 85.
