An American couple who spent eight months exploring the UK have revealed their top 10 favourite places to visit throughout England.

London isn't on the list (as they've assumed visitors will go there as a matter of course) – but spots with hidden bars, breathtaking sea arches and some of the best fish and chips in the land are. Along with a city 'you would not expect to see on a travel list'.

The pair, Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis - currently in Portland, Oregon – revealed their ranking in a video on their 'Magic Geekdom' YouTube channel.

So far, it has garnered 83,000 views.

10. Lincoln

Lincoln 'completely won us over', says Cara, 'with its incredible cathedral, fascinating history and delightful charm'. Fancy visiting? Be prepared for some calf-burning inclines.

Cara adds: 'It's a very steep city – in fact, the main thoroughfare is called Steep Hill.'

It's worth tackling, though, with Cara declaring it 'postcard-perfect'.

9. Newcastle upon Tyne

'We seem to chat with strangers the most whenever we are in Newcastle,' said Cara

Cara told MailOnline that Newcastle upon Tyne exceeded her expectations.

She said: 'It is probably not a place you would expect to see on a travel list. We have friends that live there and didn't know much about it before visiting, but it's a great city.

'We were pleasantly surprised by the amazing assortment of food, the fantastic views along the quayside, and how friendly everyone there seems to be.

'We seem to chat with strangers the most whenever we are in Newcastle.'

8. Bath

Bath is one of England's 'most memorable cities', said Cara

Bath, says Cara, is 'undeniably one of the most beautiful cities in England'.

She adds: 'It really captivated us. Throughout all of our travels, it's still one of the most memorable cities.'

The Roman Baths in Bath are an attraction you must visit, says Cara, adding that the museum there contains 'so much wonderful information'.

Other top sights the couple enjoyed were Bath Abbey – 'an architectural marvel' – and Pulteney Bridge, which is 'adorned with quaint shops and restaurants'.

In Manchester, the couple visited a hidden bar called The Washhouse, which you enter through a fake laundromat.

Jeremy says that the bar encapsulates what's so enticing about Manchester – it's 'cool and creative'.

He also recommends visiting Manchester's 'breathtaking' cathedral and the marketplace-style Afflecks shopping centre.

Jeremy adds: 'It's an eclectic city with a mix of industrial grit and modern trendiness.'

6. Jurassic Coast

The couple said they 'loved every single minute' of their time spent on the Jurassic Coast

Cara describes the Jurassic Coast as a 'must-visit Unesco heritage site'.

She adds: 'We spent several days exploring the incredible region and loved every single minute.'

Highlights for the pair included Old Harrys Rocks, dinosaur footprints at Keates Quarry and the limestone Durdle Door sea arch.

5. Cornwall

Jeremy describes Cornwall as a 'classic destination with a distinct culture and cuisine'.

It has 'some of England's most dramatic coastlines and picture-perfect fishing villages', he adds.

4. The Cotswolds

Cara says the Cotswolds will 'make you feel like you're living in an English fairytale'.

It's a place, she says, that's full of 'the loveliest villages' and 'rolling hills'.

One highlight for the pair was visiting the village of Painswick. There they wandered through the churchyard, an experience Cara likens to 'stepping into a story-book scene'.

3. Whitby

'We were most surprised by Whitby because it was so different from any place we'd ever been,' Cara told MailOnline

The couple were 'blown away' by Whitby's architecture, and waxed lyrical about the number of places there 'with stunning views'.

They also highlight the dramatic abbey - 'one of the best sites in town' – and the fish and chips.

'Getting fish and chips from one of the famous chippies in Whitby – you can't go wrong,' says Cara on the video.

She told MailOnline that it was the place that surprised them the most.

The vlogger explained: 'We were most surprised by Whitby because it was so different from any place we'd ever been. It was one of the first coastal towns in England we ever visited and from the moment we arrived, the scenery blew us away. The layers of red roofs with the Abbey ruins hovering above on the cliffs is so stunning.'

2. The Lake District

The 'breathtaking scenery' of the Lake District helped the area claim second place in the ranking

The Lake District, states Cara, is home to some of the country's 'most breathtaking scenery'.

The pair were bewitched by lake Buttermere, charmed by 'charming' Keswick and admired Ambleside, home to the fairytale Bridge House, a curious building that stands over a river.

Another highlight was the Bassenthwaite Lake Station, which serves afternoon tea in a restored railway station, with some tables positioned in a replica Orient Express carriage. 'A special experience,' says Cara.

'There's no place quite like York,' says Jeremy. 'It's a city that has a perfect blend of history and charm and feels so quintessentially English.'

The pair visited York Minster – 'one of the world's most stunning Gothic cathedrals' – and wandered through the Shambles, which they note is often called Europe's best-preserved medieval street.

'It's like nothing we've ever seen,' says Jeremy. 'And we loved browsing the quirky independent shops.'

He concludes: 'York is the kind of city I just want to wander and get lost in.'
