damn near died on the road to Clingman's Dome when I was about 13 years old.

A group of us from school spent 3 days camping at Cades Cove and woke up on the morning of the 3rd day to a pretty serious snowstorm. My dad chaperoned this trip and the 4 kids with us talked him into driving us to Clingman's dome to take in the view in the snow. The road going up was closed and folks were skiing and tubing. An older man with a tube asked us if we wanted to give it a try and I, being in the presence of a young lady I was madly in love with, said "Ill do it".

I was the hero of the group...the other boys cheered me on as I started up the hill and the young lady eyed me like a knight on a white stallion....even threw me a kiss as I started up the road. I went a little way past the first curve, just out of sight of my frie.......

In another supportive move they are replacing all verbiage on signs showing the path to the dome with arrows only.

So when is Cade’s Cove getting renamed?

I have several books on both, their names will not change with me. Or, probably anyone in that area.

People try to hold onto stuff that's dead.

Hawaii natives don't like the influx of "foreigners" (non-native Hawaiians), so not only are they racially prejudiced to whites that move their permanently, they cling mightily to their pathetic "heritage".

Say what you will about the Acadiains, but they encouraged their children to learn English, and understand and embrace their new environment.

Amazing. In some cases we restore history and in some cases, we try to erase it completely from memory. Interesting.

Is it really “erasing history” to move away from naming a mountain in 1859 after a dude that had little to nothing to do with it? What history are we erasing here, other than the history of jackasses naming things after people for little to no reason

They must have taken that picture the one time in the last century it was clear and not a completely fogged over shite fest.

Or it is AI.

Been there when it looked like that.

No they didn't. My mom spoke no English when she started school in the early 1940s. She was not allowed to speak French in class and was punished severely if she did. Acadians learning English was primarily a 20th-century phenomenon and much of the time it was forced on them.

What exactly makes it "pathetic"?

I would also point out that most of that sounds like you are describing Southern attitudes toward Yankees minus the race part.

Didn’t the Cajuns have the French beaten out of them both metaphorically and literally?

Clearly it isn’t dead as the Cherokee number over 315,000 enrolled members today. They shouldn’t get a say?

I say we have an epic king of the hill game.

Cherokee, hell, any tribe,
Versus Americans of any stripe.

Set the number to, say, 3500 on either side.

Winner gets to name the mountain

I climbed it in the 70’s and can still smell the hillbilly piss in the stairwell to the top.
