Larry David Earned $5,000 for Saying “Trump Is a Racist” on Live TV

Donald Trump’s S.N.L. monologue was short on time and on laughs, but at least it earned Larry David a cool $5,000.

Donald Trump kicked off his controversial Saturday Night Live hosting gig in rather ordinary fashion. He made the requisite self-deprecating joke (Why is he hosting? “And the answer is I have nothing better to do”) set off by the requisite (for him) bragging. Then he was joined by current S.N.L. Trump impersonator Taran Killam and classic Trump impersonator Darrell Hammond.

Then from offstage came a holler: “You’re a racist! Trump’s a racist!” It wasn’t an actual heckler but Larry David, fresh from returning to play Bernie Sanders during the cold open, in a scripted bit. “I heard if I yelled that, they’d give me $5,000,” David said.

It turns out, that’s true. Los Angeles–based activists Deport Racism 2016, one of the several groups protesting NBC’s decision to have Trump host after he’d used “racist and xenophobic” language in his campaign, put out the word this week that anybody who was heard to yell out “deport racism” or “Trump is a racist” would get $5,000 from them. And they’re going to pay up:
