It’s been he-said, they-said, he-snoozed on Twitter this weekend in the war of words between presidential candidate Donald Trump and Last Week Tonight, and the latest has the HBO show publicly refuting Trump’s claim that he turned down a request to appear on the show.

It started with Last Week Tonight host John Oliver on CBS This Morning on Friday saying that he wouldn’t want to have Trump as a guest on his show. “I haven’t really got anything to say to him,” Oliver said. He’s said everything he wants to say. He has no internal monologue, that man. So it’s not like you’re going to find the secret nugget he’s been holding back. He’s an open book. And that book doesn’t have that many interesting words in it.”

Trump fired back in the same manner he’s fired back about so many things this year: on Twitter, and with some self-aggrandizement thrown in for flavor. “John Oliver had his people call to ask me to be on his very boring and low rated show,” Trump tweeted. “I said ‘NO THANKS’ Waste of time & energy!”

Early Sunday afternoon, the official Last Week Tonight Twitter account responded bluntly: “A couple of points … 1. Yes, we have a boring show. 2. At no point did we invite Donald Trump to appear on it.”

This leaves the program's bookers with roughly only two dozen other less voluble presidential contenders to work with.
