Matt Smith Is Already Dream-Casting Meghan Markle on The Crown

He also reveals that he really loves . . . Kim Kardashian.

Meghan Markle has only been engaged to Prince Harry for about five minutes, but that isn’t stopping the cast of The Crown from dream-casting her in a future season of the hit Netflix series. Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, and Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip, stopped by Watch What Happens Live on Thursday night, where a fan asked for their thoughts on the future royal, and who they would want to play her in an upcoming season. (The video’s worth watching just to see the Brits light up when they hear the fan’s thick Alabama accent.)

Smith has clearly given this some thought, because he immediately suggested . . . Selena Gomez, even though the singer and actress hails from a very different background than Markle. (She’s half-Mexican and half-white; Markle is half-black and half-white.) “You love Selena Gomez,” Foy remarked with a smirk.

In general, the TV royals say they also highly approve of Prince Harry’s future bride. “We love it, that they’re getting married,” Foy said. “She’s an actress, so that’s great.”

“Well, she’s not anymore,” Smith noted, which is true: Markle has exited her USA show, Suits, and reportedly has retired from acting altogether in order to fully tend to her future royal duties.

A fan also asked the TV pair which members of “the American royal family, the Kardashians,” they most resemble. One can imagine that Foy dislikes that family as much as Smith likes Gomez—just look at the way she tenses up and clutches her chair when the first family of E! is mentioned.

“I don’t know that the Kardashians are the American royal family,” Andy Cohen protested. Smith quipped back: “They’re the best you’ve got.”

“Don’t say that,” Foy replied, still engaging her chair in a numbing vise grip.

“I love Kim Kardashian,” Smith offered. “I think she’s sort of amazing.”

So now you have that bit of information. Clearly, Smith relates to the second oldest Kardashian sister, though he’s got the showmanship of a Khloé—while Foy gives off pure Kourtney vibes.
