After weeks of feverish speculation, the nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards have been revealed. On Wednesday morning, past Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph shared live which comedies, dramas, limited series, and more made the cut (and, in Ralph’s case, made a true meal out of pronouncing Griselda).

As we expected would be the case, the FX epic Shōgun leads the pack with a healthy 25 nominations for its inaugural season. (Though the show was originally envisioned as a limited series, it switched to the drama category after being renewed for more installments this spring.) Most of the Japan-set drama’s major players made the cut, including lead-actor front-runner Hiroyuki Sanada and lead-actress front-runner Anna Sawai.

Shōgun is followed closely by its network mate The Bear, a (somewhat controversially categorized) comedy that earned 23 nods for its second season—which, as a reminder, was released last summer, though the show’s strategy of releasing new episodes during Emmy voting season has certainly proven to be sound. That series is coming fresh off its sweep at the most recent Emmy ceremony, which was held this past January after being delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike last fall. Some speculated that a softer reception for The Bear’s third season could affect the nomination tally for its second; those fears, it seems, have not come to pass, though it will be interesting to see if the show falls from its perch when next year’s nominations are announced.

The tallies drawn by Shōgun and The Bear were nearly met by Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, a more traditional sitcom that scored 21 nods for its star-studded latest go-round—including acting nominations for all three of its leads (Steve Martin, Martin Short, and, for the first time, Selena Gomez) as well as big-name season three additions Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep. The Emmy haul for Only Murders has another interesting footnote: Songwriting team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are nominated once more for outstanding original music and lyrics, for cowriting the earwormy patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” with fellow theater vets Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. If they win, Pasek and Paul will complete the EGOT they began working toward when they scored two Tonys and an Oscar in 2017.

The fourth-biggest nom-getter was True Detective: Night Country, which earned 19 citations—making it the most nominated project in the Emmys’ limited-or-anthology-series category.

There are several snubs and surprises to be found on the full list of Emmy nominees, including a shockingly good showing for The Morning Show—an Apple TV+ hit that really seemed to win over the TV Academy, scoring as many nominations as HBO’s more critically celebrated series Hacks. (The total for each is 16 nominations.) The starry Showtime project The Curse—featuring Nathan Fielder and recently anointed two-time best-actress Oscar winner Emma Stone—was blanked by the TV Academy entirely, earning not a single nomination. The Emmys also bestowed a healthy amount of attention on Apple series Palm Royale and Lessons in Chemistry, which were met with a more muted critical reception when each debuted this season.

Prime Video series had a good showing during the nominations as well: Dramas Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Fallout both nabbed 16 nods as well. The latter is a video game adaptation, the sort of genre experiment that doesn’t always get recognition by a body like the TV Academy—but this year’s voters responded well to both it and 3 Body Problem, a hard sci-fi adaptation on Netflix that had an unpredictably good showing with six total nominations. Perhaps that show’s pedigree—it’s the first major project to be overseen by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss since their massive HBO hit, Game of Thrones, which gobbled up awards during its eight-season run—is to thank for that.
