Dopo settimane di febbrili speculazioni, le nomination per gli Emmy Awards 2024 sono state rivelate. Come ci aspettavamo, l'epopea di FX Shōgun è in testa con ben 25 nomination per la sua stagione inaugurale. La maggior parte dei protagonisti del dramma ambientato in Giappone è stata selezionata, compresi il protagonista Hiroyuki Sanada e l'attrice Anna Sawai.
Shōgun è seguita da vicino dalla sua compagna di rete The Bear, una serie comedy (nonostante le polemiche sull'inserimento in questo genere) che ha ottenuto 23 nomination per la sua seconda stagione. La serie è reduce dalla vittoria dell'ultima cerimonia degli Emmy, andata in scena lo scorso gennaio dopo essere stata rinviata a causa dello sciopero della SAG-AFTRA dello scorso autunno. Alcuni hanno ipotizzato che un'accoglienza più morbida per la terza stagione di The Bear avrebbe potuto influenzare il numero di nomination per la seconda; questi timori, a quanto pare, non si sono avverati, anche se sarà interessante vedere se la serie cadrà dalla sua posizione quando verranno annunciate le nomination del prossimo anno.
Dopo Shōgun e The Bear, in testa alle nomination c'è Only Murders in the Building, una sitcom più tradizionale che ha ottenuto 21 candidature con la sua ultima stagiona ricca di star, comprese le nomination per tutti e tre i suoi attori principali (Steve Martin, Martin Short e, per la prima volta, Selena Gomez) e per i grandi nomi aggiunti alla terza stagione Paul Rudd e Meryl Streep. Il bottino di Emmy per Only Murders ha un'altra caratteristica interessante: la coppia di autori Benj Pasek e Justin Paul è stata nominata ancora una volta per le musiche originali e i testi, per aver scritto insieme ai veterani del teatro Marc Shaiman e Scott Wittman la canzone Which Of The Pickwick Triplets Did It?. Se vinceranno, Pasek e Paul entreranno nel «club dell'EGOT», di cui fanno parte le star dell'entertainment che hanno vinto tutti e quattro i premi più importanti dell'industria dello spettacolo: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar e Tony. I due hanno infatti già incassato sia un Tony che un Oscar nel 2017.
Quarta per numero di nomination è True Detective: Night Country, che ha ottenuto 19 candidature, diventando così il progetto più nominato nella categoria delle serie limitate o antologiche degli Emmy.
L'elenco completo dei nominati agli Emmy presenta diverse smentite e sorprese, tra cui un risultato sorprendentemente buono per The Morning Show, successo di Apple TV+ che sembra aver conquistato l'Accademia televisiva, ottenendo lo stesso numero di nomination della serie Hacks della HBO, più apprezzata dalla critica. Un altro progetto stellare della HBO, The Curse - con Nathan Fielder e Emma Stone, recentemente eletta due volte vincitrice dell'Oscar come miglior attrice - è stato completamente ignorato dall'Accademia televisiva, non ottenendo nemmeno una nomination. Gli Emmy hanno riservato una buona dose di attenzione anche alle serie della Apple Palm Royale e Lezioni di chimica, che hanno ricevuto un'accoglienza più blanda da parte della critica quando hanno debuttato in questa stagione.
