Crank up the KT Tunstall, make a grilled Jarlsberg and maybe even wear some cerulean, because today is Anne Hathaway’s birthday, and Vogue is using it as an excuse to revisit some of her best looks from The Devil Wears Prada. (She might have won an Oscar for her performance in Les Mis, but she’ll always be Andy Sachs to us.) Below, members of the Vogue team pick their favourite outfits from the 2006 blockbuster.

The art gallery look

“A fashion editor, who loves The Devil Wears Prada? Groundbreaking. From KT Tunstall’s opening credits to the tossing-the-phone-in-the-fountain finale, I love every second of that film, and I don’t care who knows it. But when it comes to the outfits, I admit that the situation is a little more hit and miss. Pushed to pick my favourite, I would have to go for the minidress, tights, knee-high boots and Chanel necklace get-up, which she parades in during the iconic outfit montage – it’s a look I would happily recreate in its entirety this winter. Are you copying the... The outfit from The Devil Wears Prada? Yeah, yeah, I am.” Joy Montgomery, commerce editor

The “everybody wants to be us” dress

“This is my favourite, mainly because it reminds me of Andy’s Y2K ringtone – a ringtone I once had and decided to change when I actually started working at Vogue.” Lydia Bowden, video editor & post-production co-ordinator

Some guy in a red T-shirt

“Like so many great works of art, Nate’s styling feels unsettling. Here is a man who just doesn’t ‘get’ fashion. A man who is willing to work unsociable hours as a sous-chef, but who will start to pout the moment that his girlfriend is forced to work a late-shift. Her star ascends, and it casts a long shadow over his own success. She is Andy Sachs in Those Chanel Boots. He is Some Guy in a red T-shirt.” Daniel Rodgers, digital fashion writer

The “I’m not your baby” corset

“An often overlooked costume in The Devil Wears Prada is the one Andy wears as she leaves Christian’s hotel room in Paris. Her line ‘I’m not your baby,’ delivered while wearing a bustier and leather pencil skirt, is really the moment when she finally starts to grow up and take back control of her life.” Lauren O’Callaghan, editorial operations manager

Are those the Chanel boots?

“‘Are you wearing the AW23 Miu Miu reading glasses?’ The question Emily Blunt should have been asking Gisele, rather than quizzing Anne Hathaway about her fresh-from-the-fashion-cupboard Chanel boots. Supermodel Gisele – aka Runway fashion girl and opticals aficionado Serena – rocks a pair of geeky rectangular frames similar to the styles that Bella Hadid and her fellow cool girls have been wearing on Instagram recently. The glasses look more like something that would have been worn by Andy pre-makeover, which is exactly what’s trending today, when off-duty models look more like they’d prefer to be at home coding than walking the catwalk. Isn’t Andy’s cerulean jumper and knee-length argyle skirt also quite Prada?” – Laura Hawkins, acting associate European fashion features director

The “I-just-threw-this-on-myself” blazer

“‘Who put that together for you?’” Nigel asks Andy when he sees her in this pencil skirt and sculpted black blazer in Paris. When he hears she just ‘threw this on herself’, he declares that his work as her unofficial stylist is done. I quite agree.” Emma Spedding, acting executive fashion news and features editor

Andy’s signature – the baker boy hat

“The Devil Wears Prada infiltrated my teenage years; I actually tried to recreate Andy’s outfits with Topshop pieces. This white coat and baker boy hat combination is my personal favourite, and a reminder that all I really want for Christmas is a pair of classic black T-bar heels.” Alyson Lowe, associate director of audience development
