Today, Chanel’s latest Métiers d’Art show found the fashion house channeling the Roman holiday aesthetic of the legendary Cinecittà—and as such, it should come as no surprise that models who walked the runway called to mind a modern-day version of Brigitte Bardot in 1963’s Contempt. After all, the infamous Jean-Luc Godard–directed film was shot at the iconic studio. Hairstylist Sam McKnight put a modern-day twist on the 1960s-inspired bouffant—which Bardot wore both trussed up and pared down on her many jaunts to the Italian capital during the decade—by slightly amping up their morning-after texture. As for those dramatic kohl-rimmed lids? Whether zipping around on a Vespa or hailing a taxi, there’s nothing like a sooty black wraparound cat-eye to confirm once and for all that you can’t improve on a classic.
