There are few things more coquettish in fashion than the bow, a trimming that has appeared in various forms throughout the Spring collections and which played a starring role at Lanvin yesterday, on filmy blouses, cardigan jackets, and Grecian dresses.

The bow can be sweet, spanning the waist of a bridesmaid or stuck in the hair of an Edwardian child in one of those sepia photographs tucked into wooden drawers at vintage shops. Worn around the neck like an outsize bow tie, it can be dapper. And sometimes bows, like those on Madame de Pompadour’s corset, are sugarcoated invitations to seduction, almost as if their knots were formed to be untied.
