Jennifer Aniston’s “The Rachel” wasn’t the only iconic haircut to come out of the ‘90s—there was also “The Meg,” cut by Manhattan’s Sally Hershberger on Meg Ryan.

“I first gave Meg this haircut for the film French Kiss,” Hershberger tells Vogue. “I believe the press went wild at the time because it was the first edgy-but-messy short haircut on a woman.”

This piecey chop quickly became Ryan's signature look, and different versions of it can be seen in Addicted to Love, Kate & Leopold, When a Man Loves A Woman, Proof of Life, and In The Cut.

Almost 30 years later, Ryan has gone meta and returned to a version “The Meg” while promoting her new film What Happens Later—and of course, trusted Hershberger her to the chopping.

“I was getting her ready for her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers and the cutting started then,” the hairstylist says. “It happened in stages, we just kept cutting.” This time around, Hershberger used her own line to style Ryan’s hair, including the 24K Supreme Body Volumizing Mousse and 24K Superiority Complex Texturizing Paste.

“I think if something is cool, it always stays in fashion,” Hershberger says of the haircut's staying power. “It's timeless and effortless sexy with a relaxed attitude.”
