The 2016 Green Carpet Challenge and The First Monday in May Screening

“Being a Brit, bringing the Met to my hometown is extraordinary,” says Andrew Bolton, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute curator in charge and Green Carpet Challenge cohost. Creativity and storytelling have long united fashion and film, so holding the fourth Challenge at BAFTA headquarters made for a glamorous night to remember, along with a screening of The First Monday in May. Dressed in an arresting (and sustainable) cerise William Vintage dress, host Livia Firth welcomed guests with her cohosts: husband Colin Firth; Keira Knightley; Anna Wintour; Natalie Massenet, Amanda Berry; William Vintage; and Andrea and Guido Bonaveri. Knightley added extra star power to her cream lace dress with a Fairmined-certified gold ring from Chopard’s Green Carpet Collection. Fresh from New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham and Thom Browne joined the best of British designers, including Erdem Moralioglu and Simone Rocha, and the new guard, among them Molly Goddard and Shrimps’s Hannah Weiland. The artisanal spirit of “Manus x Machina” was captured by jewelry designer Sabine Getty in her Iris van Herpen lasered minidress. Legendary film faces including Helena Bonham Carter chatted prescreening with Bianca Jagger and Amanda Harlech. “All of our shows have championed British design talent; ‘China’ was so John Galliano, but ‘Manus’ included so many stars—Sarah Burton, Gareth Pugh, Hussein Chalayan, Christopher Kane,” said Bolton. “Such unbelievable talent.” Cocktails were served as attendees surveyed the first biodegradable mannequins, which were dressed in a dazzling array of William Vintage’s gowns. “This one I have my eye on to take back to America,” confided Bolton, nodding to the majestic centerpiece—a John Galliano for Givenchy 1996 balloon striped ball gown complete with train.
