As a juror at the Cannes Film Festival, Elle Fanning has been present at just about every premiere and screening—and that means wardrobe changes galore. While she’s maintained her love of youthful, feminine pieces—the vibrant Valentino couture she chose for the screening of Les Misérables last week is a testament to that—her prestigious role in the proceedings has allowed her to switch things up. At this afternoon’s premiere of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino’s off-kilter retelling of the Manson murders, the young actress gave onlookers a crash course in French fashion history. In a full tulle skirt, sheer shirt with pussy bow, and black macramé hat from Dior, she recalled the house's signature mid-century silhouette.

Dubbed the New Look, the styles that originated from Christian Dior’s 1947 collection served to revitalize French fashion after World War II. With their cinch waists and strong shoulders, the bar suits have all become iconic, along with those distinctive wide-brim chapeaus. And Dior’s current creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, has updated this beloved fashion legacy with modern verve. To wit, Fanning’s ivory silk organza shirt and tulle skirt appeared light and airy, despite the 450-plus hours of work that went into their creation.

With four more days left in the festival, Fanning is sure to wear other memorable outfits, though her Dior moments stands apart as something truly special. The red carpet at Cannes may be overflowing with celebrities in gigantic or overly revealing dresses, but Fanning’s retro elegance managed to outshine them all.
